Bihu is the national festival of the people of the Assam Valley. The world ‘Bihu’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Bisuva’. It is celebrated on the BisuvaSankranti Day that is the last day of the year.

How many types of Bihu festival is celebrated in Assam?
The Bihu festival is celebrated mainly twice in the year, once on the Bisuva Sankranti Day and again on the ‘Poush Sankranti Day’ or the last day of the month of Poush.
This festival on the last day of the year is in fact the national festival of Assam. It begins on the last day of Chaitra and runs till the seventh day of Baisakhi. It is celebrated with much pomp and grandeur. This festival is called ‘Rangoli Bihu’. In the Assamese language Rangoli means delightful. This festival is an expression of joy of the people welcoming the spring season.
The month of Baisakh marks the approach of spring in Assam. Nature assumes a charming form. At this time trees and creepers are adorned with flowers in various colours. There is beauty all around. The Bihu festival is celebrated in this background.
How does They Celebrate Bihu Festival
The first day of the festivals is spent in prayers and worship. Much importance is attached on that day to charity, showing respect to the elders and telling the future with the help of almances. House holders bathe in holy places. Even cattle are made to bath on this occasion.
On the Scond day all put on new clothes and get ready for the festival. For the whole week the festival goes on through dances, songs, feasts and entertainments. The air becomes alive with the sounds of drum, flutes and emboles. People go from house to house singing a kind of song, known as the 'Huchari'.
Importance of the Bihu Festival
Other features of the festival are bull-fight, cock-fight and the game of eggs. This festival is celebrated fully in the villages of Assam. The people of the towns observe the day through feasts and entertainments. Many songs are composed in connection with the festival. They form an Important part of Assamese literature.
